Internet Innovation

Internet Innovation
Did you know that 40 per cent of all Internet users today have mobile Internet access? That means mobile Internet users could represent more than 20 per cent of your site’s traffic. Put another way, that’s more than 500 million people. Are you optimising your content – or your website – for that massive audience? If you’re not thinking about mobile browsing, then you’re missing new business opportunities. Guaranteed.
Find out more about the business opportunity behind mobilising your web content.
If you have web design experience and want to adapt your existing web content for mobile, this is a great time to get started. And it’s not difficult at all. Using your knowledge of standard Web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript™, and CSS, you can extend your Web services to create fantastic, mobile-optimised websites or Web Runtime (WRT) widgets. Everything you need to know about serving mobile web users is available at
Forum Nokia.
The Calling All Innovators contest is looking for both websites which are optimised for mobile browsing with Nokia devices, as well as web applications called WRT widgets for Nokia devices.

To have a qualified entry in this category, you will need to submit either:

A WRT widget, submitted in the .WGZ format
A URL for your mobile-optimised website, along with any supporting screenshots and/or sitemap information that includes the optimisation logic, such as, whether it’s a mobile specific site (.mobi etc.) or browser optimisation with the same URL as the one for the desktop

Each contest category has been refined to provide you with additional guidance about the types of applications that the judges will be expecting to see. These additional areas reflect the desire to identify applications and services which enable Nokia mobile users to be in control of their busy lives and easily manage their frequent interactions with family and friends. At the same time, the applications are not just about personal productivity. Think entertainment and fun, too.

And of course, any contest submission in this category needs to make the most of Nokia’s platform capabilities, so touch-based input methods should be top-of-mind.

Some examples of the types of applications that the judges will be looking for include

Communications – WRT widgets to enhance the communication experience between consumers and services by using mobile messaging, instant messaging, e-mail, and other forms of 21st century communication.

Entertainment - WRT widgets that speak clearly to the next generation of mobile web users, including apps for social networking; gaming; music and media services to create, edit and share content with friends; recommendations for things to do, such as concerts or movies; or perhaps premium services where individuals can discover and share new ideas and information with one another
Life Balance - WRT widgets that consider the physical and mental well-being of the user, including health advice/guidance, health monitoring using sensors, route-planning (such as for exercise routines), "brain" games for mental exercise

Personal Information Management - WRT widgets for time management, navigation, information search, concierge-type services, or incorporating RSS feeds.Social Responsibility - WRT widgets that aid environmental and ethical decision making, such as showing Carbon Offset opportunitiesIf your contest application does not fit one of the specific areas above, don’t give up. Plan to select the option for "Other" when you submit your application. Remember: we want to see your best work!Note: You can only submit one application per category (i.e., Internet Innovation; Flash; or Emerging Markets and Mobile Necessities). Any entries exceeding this limit are ineligible for the contest and will not be considered by the judges. When you submit your application for judging, you will be able to select the specific area within the category where your application fits, if appropriate.
